Geoffrey Tyack: Oxford : An Architectural Guide

Oxford : An Architectural Guide

Description

Few cities have a greater concentration of significant architecture than Oxford. Within a city of only 130,000 inhabitants there are important buildings, many of them of great beauty, from every period from the eleventh century down to the present. Geoffrey Tyack chronicles the architectural development of Oxford-both University and City-from its origins to the late twentieth century, explaining the idiosyncracies of Oxford's architectural history, and placing the buildings within their historical context. His approach is chronological, and his emphasis on what can actually be seen. Although many books have been written about individual buildings and various aspects of Oxford architecture, no book of this kind has been published for many years.

Description

Excerpt from Contributions From the Department of Neurology and the Laboratory of Neuropathology, Vol. 2: For the Year 1906 Cerebral localization had several epochs during the nineteenth century. At its dawn the views of Gall had awakened interest not only in the scientific world, but in all the European centers of population. Gall had boldly advanced the idea that the brain was not only subdivided into centers of special function, but that these were indicated on the outside of the head by peculiar prominences and conformations. An essential element of his phrenology was the existence of cranial salients, recognizable by the skilled fingers of the examiner, and constituting the ectal correlatives of ental physiologic centers in the brain substance. The bumps of the phrenologist represented gyres and subgyres, in which resided, as in the compartments of an elaborately arranged house, the habitants of the soul or mind. Alexander Hall: Scheduling and Flow-Related Problems in Networks

Scheduling and Flow-Related Problems in Networks

Description

Recently the number of applications in the Internet which use data broadcasts, such as pay-per-view services, has increased greatly. In broadcast scheduling one is interested in answering user requests in such services with as little bandwidth as possible by bundling the answers appropriately. Flows over time are an important notion arising in connection with various applications in communication and transportation networks. One of the basic question here is how can demands in a given network be routed to their destinations as quickly as possible? Economic relationships in the Internet are of great interest, e.g., when investigating robustness issues. Since they are treated as trade secrets, it is a challenge to infer them form samples of routes taken by packets in the Internet. The author Alexander Hall gives introductions and several novel results for these three problem areas. Some of the main results resolve the complexity of the major optimization problems encountered in the three areas. Thereby, important and in some cases long-standing open questions have been answered. From an algorithmic point of view, optimal and approximation algorithms for each of the three areas are proposed. This book is of interest to scientists in academia and industry working on research problems pertaining to communication and transportation networks.

A modern classic in Japan on par with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or The Catcher in the Rye, Botchan is a very popular Japanese novel and still widely read decades after its first publication. Botchan, a timeless Japanese novel written by Japan's most beloved novelist, Soseki Natsume, is now available in a revised edition featuring a new foreword by Dennis Washburn, Professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages at Dartmouth College. Prof. Washburn's foreword places the importance of both the author and the book into perspective for the modern reader. Botchan's story is a familiar one: the youngest son in a middle class Tokyo family, he is consistently in the shadow of his elder brother. With a practically nonexistent relationship with his family, Botchan finds himself cast adrift after both his parents die. Now on his own, Botchan drifts through college only to find himself thrust into a teaching job in the unfamiliar realm of a country school, far from Tokyo and the life he has known. Botchan's difficulty adjusting to his new life is eloquently described, from his nosy landlord to his students, who delight in tormenting the newcomer from the big city. Through it all, Botchen's life is threaded with his vacillating concern for Kiyo, the family servant he left behind who was the only person to give him love and understanding in his life. Regardless of where he goes or what he does, he is always trying to apply the lessons she taught him to his life.

H. V. Morton: In Search of London

In Search of London

Description

H. V. Morton turns his traveler's intuition and his reporter's eye for detail to the city that has fascinated him since childhood--London past, present, and timeless. He explores the City and the Temple, Covent Garden, SoHo, and all the "submerged villages beneath the flood of bricks and mortar," uncovering layer upon layer of London's history. Morton follows the thread of imagination back and forth across the city, tracing unforgettable scenes: the Emperor Claudius leading his war elephants across the Thames...the grisly executions at the Tower...the world of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Queen Victoria...and the shattered yet defiant city of the Blitz as well as the postwar London of "ruins and hatless crowds." Morton's quest for London's heart reveals how its daily life is rooted in a past that is closer and more familiar than we might think, making the book as informative, entertaining, and rich in human color today as when it was written fifty years ago.

Including brand new material, this is the complete collection of Rebus short stories from the SUNDAY TIMES No.1 bestseller. The Art of Maurice Sendak: v.2: 1980 to Present

Description

Maurice Sendak ranks as one of the best known and loved children's book artists in the USA, and has been awarded both the Hans Christian Andersen Medal and the Caldecott Medal. This volume picks up where Selma Lanes' monograph of his work "The Art of Maurice Sendak", published in 1980, leaves off, tracing Sendak's life and work from 1980 to 2003. An extended essay by playwright Tony Kushner, a long-time friend of Sendak's provides an intimate view of the artist. Kushner not only gives a chronological overview of Sendak's work, but also allows us to see him as an accomplished author and artist redefining his legacy, and as a man coming to terms with himself.

Description
